I am about to tell you a true story about marketing, money and finding my sales voice.

Read it through to the very end, and your time will be well rewarded. 

Here goes.

My first year of Junior High, a popular friend told me I’d need to hide how smart I was if I wanted the boys to like me.

She also told me it was “too bad” I was so tall. (I was 5’9 at age 14 -- head and shoulders above most in my class). 

I was also the only bi-racial kid in my all-white school, which added the final layer of dating difficulty to my teenage experience.

My friends and I reasoned that, while I couldn’t change how tall I was, or the colour of my skin, I could absolutely control how smart I seemed. 

"If they realize what a geek you are, you’ll scare the boys off,” my friend said. “Boys don’t like girls who intimidate them.”

In what I now realize was a heartbreaking move, I started dumbing myself down publicly in order to be more popular.

When teachers returned our tests, I’d quickly cover up my A+ grades.

I stopped reading books during recess.

I didn’t raise my hand as often in class, even though I always knew the answers. 

I was taught that smart and popular just didn’t go together.

The strategy worked! 

Within a month of dumbing myself down, I gained a boyfriend.

Unfortunately, my confidence and sense of self took a MASSIVE hit. 

(This trend is nothing new for teenage girls by the way, we now know girls confidence drastically around the age of 14). 

It would be nearly two decades before I was able to reclaim my sense of self and own my brilliance. 

What does this story have to do with you and your business?

Everything.

The moment you decide to begin marketing your service  business online, you are stepping into a new kind of Junior High.

You will encounter bright, shiny, popular sales and marketing experts -- much like my “friend” from Grade 7 -- who will instruct you to dumb yourself down in order to gain followers and sell more.

They will instruct you to present yourself as a perfect, accessible mannequin in order to land sales.

They will encourage you to squeeze your life’s work into their “paint by the numbers system” so you can make money in your sleep.

You might get some quick sales, but your confidence will plummet. 

You will not be comfortable marketing. You’ll have trouble selling with confidence. 

Because you have dumbed yourself down. You have conformed to a light and fluffy mold. 

You will have presented yourself as a cute bunny when, to paraphrase Glennon Doyle in her bestselling book Untamed, you are not a bunny, you are god damn cheetah. 

By hiding your brilliance and trying to conform to the sales and marketing status quo, you will set yourself and your business back YEARS. 

Let me be clear: ANY marketing strategy that encourages you to tone down, dumb down or otherwise compress your wisdom to fit a mold will never work for YOU.

(It will work for others who are OK following rules, fitting in and conforming to the status quo. But let’s face it, the fact you are still reading this tells me that’s not you.)

Flash forward to 2015.

I am in my 30s, I am still smart, still tall (now 6’0) and yes, still bi-racial.

I am married to a gorgeous man who loves my brain, and I have two sons who I am raising to be feminists.

And gosh darn it if I don’t make the same mistake I made in Junior High!

I follow the status quo marketing advice telling me to dumb myself down and make myself accessible so that people will like me.
